Can I Keep My Software License After Selling My ML-1A or ML-2A?

Short answer: No

Your ML-1A or ML-2A's software license is permanently tied to that specific microphone's hardware serial number. When you sell the microphone, the license must transfer to the new owner along with it. The two can't be separated. Once the transfer is complete, you will no longer have access to the plugin (Virtual Microphone System) under that license.

If you decide to purchase an ML-1A or ML-2A later on, that microphone will come with its own new license tied to its serial number. It would be a completely separate mic/license pairing, rather than a continuation of the one you have now.

How the license transfer works

Since each transfer requires us to verify the payment and manually move the software license to the new owner, it isn’t something that happens automatically. Our support team handles the transfer directly from start to finish. Steps outlined below:

  1. Open a support ticket letting us know you've sold your ML-1A or ML-2A and need the license transferred to the new owner.
  2. We'll send you a secure payment link for the $25.00 transfer fee directly through your ticket. (We don't publish this link publicly, since every transfer is manually reviewed on our end.)
  3. Complete payment, then reply to your ticket to confirm.
  4. We verify the payment, then:
    • Revoke the original license from your account
    • Issue a brand-new software code, sent to you through that same support ticket
  5. You're responsible for passing the new code along to the buyer. We send the replacement code to the seller, not directly to the buyer, so be sure to forward it once you receive it.
  6. The new owner redeems the code and registers the hardware serial number to their own Slate Digital/Complete Access account, completing the transfer.

A few important notes

  • We recommend handling the transfer through Slate Digital support rather than reassigning the license solely through iLok License Manager. Going through us ensures your Complete Access account information updates correctly too... not just the iLok side.
  • Once your original license is revoked, there's no way to retain use of the plugin while the hardware changes hands. The mic's serial number and its software license always travel together.
  • If you decide to pay for the license transfer later, just have your ticket number handy when you follow up. That’ll help us locate everything and get the transfer processed more quickly.

Can I share my license across multiple systems?

Each ML-1A or ML-2A includes a single VMS license with two activation slots — but both of those slots must live on one iLok ID, under one Slate Digital account.

  • You can use your two activations across two of your own systems, in any combination of supported activation types, as long as they're all on the same iLok ID. For example:
    • Two iLok USB dongles
    • Two Machine IDs (two computers)
    • One iLok dongle + one Cloud Session
    • One Machine ID + one Cloud Session
    • Any other mix of two supported activation types under that single iLok ID
  • You cannot split those two activations across two different iLok IDs or two different Slate Digital accounts. The license is intended for one user only, so it can’t be shared with someone else, even if you’re only using one of the two available activations yourself.

If you want someone else to have access to the plugin, the license needs to be formally transferred to their account (see above), not shared alongside yours.
