Understanding License Activation Methods in Slate Digital Connect
When activating your Slate Digital licenses for the first time, you have two options: iLok Cloud Activation and Machine-ID Activation. Each method has its own advantages and requirements, so it's important to choose the one that best fits your workflow.
1. iLok Cloud Activation (Cloud Session)
iLok Cloud allows you to access your plugins across multiple devices without needing a physical iLok dongle or tying the license to a single computer.
How It Works:
- You can use your plugins on any computer as long as your iLok Cloud session is open.
- An active internet connection is required at all times to maintain license authentication.
- If the internet connection drops or the iLok Cloud session is closed, the plugins will no longer work until the session is re-established.
Best For:
✔️ Users who frequently switch between multiple computers.
✔️ Those with a reliable internet connection.
✔️ Quick and flexible access without dealing with a physical dongle or local activation.
2. Machine-ID Activation (Local Activation)
Machine-ID activation stores your license directly on your computer, allowing you to use your plugins offline.
How It Works:
- Once activated, the license is tied to your specific machine and does not require an internet connection.
- If you need to switch computers, you must manually deactivate the license from the current machine using the iLok License Manager before reactivating it on a new one.
- Important: You must be on the computer where the license is active in order to deactivate it. You cannot deactivate it remotely.
Best For:
✔️ Users who prefer an offline workflow.
✔️ Those working on one or two dedicated computers.
✔️ Users who want reliable access without depending on an internet connection.
Choosing the Right Activation Method
Both methods are available when activating your plugin licenses through Slate Digital Connect. However, consider the following before making your choice:
Feature | iLok Cloud Activation | Machine-ID Activation |
---|---|---|
Requires Internet | ✅ Yes, always required | ❌ No, only for activation |
Works on Multiple Devices | ✅ Yes | ❌ Tied to a maximum of two machines at a time |
Offline Usage | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
License Transfer | ✅ Automatic (sign in on any computer) | ❌ Manual (must deactivate first) |
Additional Notes
-
Slate Digital All Access Pass licenses come with two activations and can be activated on:
- iLok Cloud
- iLok 2 or iLok 3 dongle
- Machine-ID (local host)
-
iLok Dongle Activation: You cannot activate licenses to an iLok dongle through Slate Digital Connect at this time. If you prefer using a dongle, follow this guide:
Activate and Use My Plugins with an iLok Dongle - While Machine-ID Activation does not require an internet connection for the majority of the time, you must connect the machine to the internet once after every renewal so that the machine can confirm the licenses have renewed.
- If you prefer to manage your licenses in the iLok License Manager, you can choose between all 3 activation methods:
