Virtu: Does It Change Bit Depth or Apply Dithering?

This article explains how Virtu handles bit depth during mastering and whether dithering is applied during export.

Important: This information applies to both versions of Virtu: the web-based version and the desktop application.

Does Virtu change the bit depth of my file?

No. Virtu exports your master using the same bit depth as the file that was originally uploaded.

For example:

  • If you upload a 16‑bit file, the exported master will remain 16‑bit.
  • If you upload a 24‑bit file, the exported master will remain 24‑bit.

Virtu does not currently include options to change bit depth during export.

Does Virtu apply dithering?

No. Virtu does not apply dithering during the mastering or export process.

If you need to convert a 24‑bit master to 16‑bit with dithering, this should be done after exporting from Virtu using your DAW or a mastering tool that supports dithering.

This workflow is common in mastering because dithering is typically applied at the very final stage when preparing a file for a specific delivery format.

Do I still need to deliver 16‑bit masters?

In most modern distribution workflows, 24‑bit masters are widely accepted and often preferred. Many streaming platforms now support high‑resolution audio files.

Examples include:

  • DistroKid – Accepts both 16‑bit and 24‑bit WAV files (up to 24‑bit / 96 kHz).
  • Spotify – Supports high‑resolution masters and uses 24‑bit files for newer lossless tiers.
  • Apple Music – Streams audio from 16‑bit / 44.1 kHz up to 24‑bit / 192 kHz.
  • Tidal and Amazon Music – Prioritize 24‑bit files for their highest‑quality streaming tiers.

When is 16‑bit still required?

The main scenario where 16‑bit / 44.1 kHz is still required is for physical CD production (Red Book CD standard).

Some older playback systems or niche digital stores may also request 16‑bit files for compatibility.

Recommended Virtu workflow

  1. Export your mix at the highest available quality (typically 24‑bit WAV).
  2. Upload the file to Virtu for mastering.
  3. Download the mastered file from Virtu.
  4. If needed, create a 16‑bit dithered version in your DAW for CD production or specific delivery requirements.
