Virtu: How Reference Tracks, Styles, and Mastering Credits Work

This article explains how reference tracks interact with Virtu's processing, how the Advanced Controls behave, and why mastering credits may appear on the website but not in the desktop app.

How does uploading a reference track impact my uploaded track?

Uploading a reference track changes the Style Virtu uses to analyze and process your track.

When a reference track is uploaded:

  • The reference track becomes the active Style.
  • Any previously selected style (such as Pop or Universal) is replaced.
  • Virtu analyzes the reference track and builds a suggested EQ curve and loudness target based on it.

Because the algorithm changes how it approaches your audio when a reference track is used, the overall processing behavior may change even though your Advanced Control settings remain available.

Recommended workflow when using a reference track

For the most predictable results, we recommend the following workflow:

  1. Upload your source track.
  2. Upload your reference track so Virtu can establish the style.
  3. Then adjust the Advanced Controls (EQ, compression, width, etc.) to fine-tune the result.

If you change the style or upload a different reference track after making adjustments, it is recommended to revisit and tweak the Advanced Controls again.

Why do I see mastering credits on the website but not in the desktop app?

Virtu is available in two versions, and they handle mastering credits differently.

Desktop Application

  • No mastering credits are required.
  • You can master unlimited tracks locally.
  • This is why credit information does not appear inside the desktop app.

Web Version

  • Uses cloud-based processing and storage.
  • Mastering uses credits.
  • Complete Access Bundle subscribers receive 3 free mastering credits per month.

These credits are what you see displayed on the Virtu website.

Which version should I use?

  • If you want unlimited mastering with no credits, the desktop app is usually the best option.
  • If you prefer cloud-based mastering and storage, you can use the web version and apply mastering credits.
