VMR 2.0 System Overview

Supported Architectures

The Virtual Mix Rack (VMR) System works on both Mac and Windows 64-bit operating systems. The supported plugin formats are: VST2, VST3, AU, and AAX.

About Binary Versions

There is one key detail to understand about the VMR System; the rack and its modules are version-dependent.

Because VMR is an audio plugin, it depends on how plugin formats and host DAWs interface with it. These formats evolve alongside modern operating systems and hardware, and VMR must evolve with them.

With every product release, we adapt our framework to new technologies, optimize DSP efficiency, and improve stability. These changes are rolled out consistently across the entire platform.

Compatibility Rule: A VMR module with version X will only work within a rack of version X.

For example, if you install a module or bundle at version 3.2, both the rack plugin and all installed modules must also be updated to 3.2.

We plan to implement easier ways to ensure your VMR System stays current in future updates.

Modular System

The Slate Digital VMR System is a modular architecture. Modules (processing units) operate within the Virtual Mix Rack plugin (the rack platform).

There are two general types of modular systems:

  1. Monolithic architecture: The host and modules are bundled. Adding a module requires updating the entire system.
  2. Decoupled architecture: The host and modules are separate. New modules can be added without changing the host.

VMR uses the second model, allowing flexibility to add new modules without needing to update older ones, making it scalable and extensible for modern production needs.

System Components

The VMR platform includes two primary components:

  1. Virtual Mix Rack Plugin: The plugin loaded in your DAW, which acts as the rack and central controller.
  2. VMR Modules: Miniature plugins that function only within the Virtual Mix Rack.

VMR Plugin

This is the core plugin you insert into your DAW. It provides the interface for loading, managing, and organizing your processing modules.

VMR Modules

VMR Modules are individual processors such as compressors, EQs, utility tools, or creative effects. While they behave like regular plugins, they are only accessible within the VMR Plugin.

From VMR’s perspective, the rack acts as a host, and the modules are its internal components. This structure allows for a wide range of processing types — from dynamics and EQ to metering, mastering, and time-based effects.

With this design, the VMR System offers endless creative possibilities in a streamlined and future-proof environment.
