❌ “Error: Invalid File” (aka ESR Error)
A required file for Virtual Mix Rack is missing or damaged.
This is the “ESR Error” — and it usually appears when there are conflicting versions of a plugin installed on your system.
🎯 What Causes the ESR Error?
On Windows, this typically happens when:
- Multiple versions of a plugin are installed in different directories.
- Your DAW scans both locations, becomes unsure which version to load, and throws an error.
Example:
- VerbSuite Classics v1.0.8.3 at:
C:\Program Files\Vstplugins
- VerbSuite Classics v1.0.11.1 at:
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins
⚠️ Both folders are scanned by your DAW → ESR Error
🧹 How to Fix It
1️⃣ Check and Clean Plugin Paths
- Open your DAW’s Plug-in Manager.
- Review all plugin directories listed.
- Navigate to each one in File Explorer and delete any version of the plugin causing issues.
Common plugin paths to check:
C:\Program Files\Vstplugins
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins
C:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Vstplugins
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Steinberg\VST2
2️⃣ Uninstall Using Add or Remove Programs (or Slate Digital Connect)
- Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
- Uninstall the affected plugin (e.g., Virtual Mix Rack).
3️⃣ Double-Check Other Plugin Types
Ensure nothing is left behind in these folders:
VST (32-bit):
C:\Program Files (x86)\VstPlugins
VST (64-bit):
C:\Program Files\VstPlugins
VST3 (32-bit):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\VST3
VST3 (64-bit):
C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3
AAX (64-bit):
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins
AAX (32-bit):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Avid\Audio\Plug-Ins
4️⃣ Reinstall Latest Plugin Versions
After cleanup:
- Reboot your system (optional but recommended).
- Download and install the latest plugin versions from:
https://app.completeaccess.audio/installers
5️⃣ Update iLok License Manager
- Windows: Download for Windows
- Mac: Download for Mac
🛡️ Preventing Future ESR Errors
- Use a single plugin install folder (per plugin format) where possible.
- Pay close attention to install paths during plugin installation.
- Regularly review and clean plugin directories listed in your DAW.
